"Harrier Carrier" challenge (Sept 2019)
The next challenge is here. This time we will be drawing a "Harrier Carrier" - a ship able to launch and recover VTOL "jump jets". Thanks go to Rowdy36 for the suggestion on this one!
Requirements (all dates below are guidelines, not rigid requirements):
- Surface ship or submarine
- 1970-present
- Capable of operating VTOL "jump jets", of any type (real, AU, or otherwise)
- Any navy (AU or otherwise)
- Any mission (operating jump jets does not have to be the ship's primary mission)
Submit a "Harrier Carrier" of any type, from any country or AU, within the allowed time frame (1970-present). Designs can range from purpose-built amphibious assault ships like the America or Tarawa class to converted merchant ships a la Atlantic Conveyor in the Falklands War. This challenge will define a "jump jet" as any fixed-wing VTOL-capable aircraft, real or imaginary. There is no requirement for the amount of jump jets your ship must be capable of operating. Feel free to show as many versions of the ship throughout its service life. Submit your drawing with or without a text block accompanying it.
---
Length of challenge & judging categories:
This challenge will run until 23:59:59 UTC October 1st. Entries submitted after 23:59:59 UTC on October 1st will be disqualified.
Drawings will be scored via Google Forms poll, based on the below categories to decide a winner. The poll will close 23:59:59 UTC on October 4th. Categories are as follows, with 10 points available in categories 1-4 and 5 points in category 5:
1. Drawing quality (1-10): quality of the drawing; this would include detailing, shading, accuracy, etc.
2. Design realism (1-10): how realistic the design feels with or without the associated backstory.
3. Originality (1-10): did the artist just copy an existing design and add a new paint scheme, or did they design something new from the ground up?
4. Suitability (1-10): is the design presented actually suitable for the challenge? Does it fulfill the requirements posed?
5. Kitbash factor (1-5): heavily kitbashed work gets a 1, all-original work gets a 5.
The poll will not allow commentary. Reviewers are encouraged to leave a post in this thread once polling begins with their commentary for each drawing.
---
Challenge rules:
- One entry per person.
- Multiple versions of your entry are allowed, provided they show the same ship's evolution over time.
- Multiple views of your drawing are encouraged but not required.
- Text blocks with stats, history, etc are allowed but not required.
- Springsharp stat blocks are allowed but not required.
- Discussion of Springsharp is not allowed in this thread.
- Posts that are off topic in this thread will be deleted.
---
Inspiration:
Real-world examples of ships that fit the bill range from the purpose-built US Navy LHAs to the converted light carriers operated by the Spanish (Dedalo). Atlantic Conveyor (converted merchant ship) is another good example.
Real-world examples of jump jets include the Harrier, F-35B, and Yak-38.
Good luck everyone and happy drawing!

Re: "Harrier Carrier" challenge (Sept 2019)
May I use as the main fighter of the embarqued air group my fictional jump jet of the previous challenge?
I will try to do my best, but certainlly an aircraft carrier is beyond my present drawing capabilities . Cheers!

Re: "Harrier Carrier" challenge (Sept 2019)
I am highly intrigued by this challenge. Pondering a mission seems like the obvious first step
Re: "Harrier Carrier" challenge (Sept 2019)
There is no restriction on the type of jump jet - just that it's a "jump jet"
