SS Edmund Fitzgerald.

#1 Post by Raxar »

39 years ago, around this time, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald went down in a November storm in Lake Superior.
At 7:10pm Eastern Time, the SS Arthur M. Anderson, headed with the Fitzgerald to the shelter of Whitefish Bay, radioed in to check on their condition. Captain Edmund McSorley replied, "We are holding our own." 10 minutes later, the Anderson could neither raise the Fitzgerald on radio nor locate them by radar. The ship went down with all 29 hands, and is regarded as the greatest maritime disaster in modern history. The sinking had a large impact on safety regulations on the Great Lakes.
