Zombie Apocalypse Survival Ship Discussion

#1 Post by Syzmo »

I want to design a ship that is purpose built for fighting zombies and I need help generating ideas as to what that may entail. I'm looking to brainstorm ideas before I actually sit down and draw something.

The Zombie Apocalypse has started and the Navy needs new ships, designed specifically for providing support for groups of survivors. My thoughts on the design is that the ships would need to be relatively small and shallow drafted, no more than 350x50x15, but still ocean going. Speed would not be as much of a consideration as economy and simplicity. They would need room for boats and a helicopter to land and they would need weapons systems that could provide support against zombies, as well as fight off any human survivors who might attack. The crew would be relatively small but there would have to be room for landing parties. My first thought was something close to a modified destroyer escort, small, simple, ocean going, and mass producible.

What do you guys think the design requirements should be? Are there ships out there today that could be retrofitted? What weapons systems, sensors, and other equipment would be best suited for the apocalypse?

In a Zombie Apocalypse it is every man for himself.
And any form of government would collapse in days.

The consensus is still out on that. Either way, with old governments or new ones, at a certain point large groups of humans will band together and begin retaking territory and I'm trying to figure out what the naval part of that campaign will look like.

Well the best equipment would be either Russian or Chinese as it tends to not break as easily as NATO/western equipment.

While I'm getting tired of the whole Zombie thing, a fundamental question is "What type of zombie are we looking at?" Are they slow (the walking dead), fast(Zombieland), human ant (the World War Z trailer), or god forbid - a Black Lantern*? Each type takes on special requirements on how to fight.

Personally, I think that the best bet to fight them off would be something like a PH.75. It gives you the range that nuclear offers, while having lots of space for supplies and embarked craft. Smaller craft are good also, but I tend to think big. If you don't go big, then you need to go for stuff that doesn't break often. I try to come up with more detail later.

Shut up. You really don't know anything about human interaction in disaster scenarios.

*If you're up against Black Lanterns, the only hope is the White Light of the combined emotional spectrum, or the Kryptonian Tech that can duplicate it. Either way, you're in real trouble.

Personally I'd go for something like an APD or perhaps even better, an LKA. Long range, plenty space, enough firepower to really mess up most types of zombies and relatively low manning requirements.
β€œClose” only counts with horseshoes, hand grenades, and tactical nuclear weapons.
That which does not kill me has made a grave tactical error
