Thank God that no one was killed and that the pilots ejected.

That is one hell of a close shave. Good to see that there haven't been any casualties reported.

I'm glad there hasn't been any immediate reports, and hopefully none will come later.Blackbuck wrote:That is one hell of a close shave. Good to see that there haven't been any casualties reported.

Update on the situation, the F/A-18D suffered a mechanicial malfunction upon take off when it slammed in the apartment complex, currently, besides the injuries suffered by the two pilots, one an instructor, the other a pilot performing the training run, 5 people in the apartment complex and surrounding area, however luckily the injuries were all minor. Still it is great that the pilots managed to eject and the fuel had been dumped, if they hadn't there most likely would have been countless more injuries, damage, and fatalities.

As far as we know, was the malfunction specific to that aircraft, or possibly a wider problem? I remember a while back that F-15C or D had its cockpit snap off in flight, and the fleet (F-15E not included) was grounded. I hope this was a malfunction specific to this particular aircraft and not a wider issue with the fleet.

I believe the issue is specific to that particular airframe and not the whole fleet of F/A-18's, the malfunction was determined to be catastrophic engine failure, though we'll have to see what the investigation turns up.Wikipedia & Universe wrote:As far as we know, was the malfunction specific to that aircraft, or possibly a wider problem? Birdstrike or FOD would be a very real possibility here.

It was a mechanical failure in the engines, that was known not long after the crash, what exact engine issue came to fruition though is still under investigation, as of the past two days.
