Posted in wrong thread before. As per Rhade's request, added a version with the barrel support.

The Gloster CXP-1001 fighter.
Designed for the Nationalist Chinese from 1946, a full-scale mock-up was built but the retreat to Taiwan forced the termination of this project. It was to be powered by a Rolls-Royce Nene, armed with four 20mm cannon or two 30mm cannon and designed to reach 600mph and 40,000 feet. With the two drop tanks and ventral tank seen here the CXP-1001 was designed to fly 1,000 miles.

Blimey.

This would have been a serious combat aircraft; why didn't we build it ourselves?

Because there was already the P-80 and the Meteor (I understand it basically was a single-engine Meteor) with stuff like the F-86 and Hunter already on the drawing board, or at least intermediat projects. It would've been great against what the Communists had in the 40s but the MiG-15 certainly at least would have better parity.

Yes. But 600mph and 500 miles radius? This would have made the Meteor look woleful.

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that British government of the day was the same government that sold newest Nene and Derwent jet engines to the
Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics?
It is said that when Stalin was asked for permission to allow purchase of jet engines from Great Britain, he responded: "You can try, but no idiot would sell us that".
Yet that idiot has been found.
