The downside I see for your notional lunar mission is that the docking ports on the descent pods are going to be stressed pretty badly during your insertion burns. This is one downside of lifting bodies: it's hard to come up with a linear stack that makes much sense.

That's not a bad idea. That component could launch long-and-skinny, turn 90deg for mating with the overall spacecraft, and then you're in good shape. I would probably draw the "shelters" as open space-frame trusses, but I like the concept a lot more now.
I think you need a big angry engine bell for your insertion engine, though!

interesting.
Space isn't my speciality. But what with a Frame with inside a airtight canvas (lightweight and all that), and you can work on the lander inside a airtight environment... if an emergency service is needed.erik_t wrote:I would probably draw the "shelters" as open space-frame trusses

I think I'll have to retain in "long-and-skinny" form in able to have as light landers as possible. Those are supposed to refuel in the Moon surface; either from cargo landers or/and with ice founded...
Not really sure what heuhen meant, but here is a rough section sketch of the vessel.

I was thinking something along these one (lightweight, somewhat easy to transport):
(Inflateable station structure)
The lander would have to be transported from the surface (earth), on a separate transport system anyway, before getting connected to the "space-ship" itself up in space. If not the lander is transported in a sort of container, that is just adde on the spaceship.
