Hawker Hurricane Mk.I in Yugoslav service

Following on from the success of the Hawker Fury, Yugoslavia adopted the Hurricane and was the first export customer.

Image

An initial batch of 12 aircraft started delivery from the end of 1938, these aircraft are notable for being fitted with a 2-bladed, fixed pitch wooden propeller. A second batch of Hurricanes were delivered in early 1940. A production licence was also obtained for local construction. The Zmaj and Rogožarski factories near Belgrade both started construction, although only Zmaj completed aircraft by the time of the Axis invasion as supply of foreign components like instruments and engines became problematic with the deteriorating international situation. But even during the invasion, construction continued and a further 8 aircraft were delivered to squadrons before the surrender.

Captured Yugoslav Hurricanes in Italy

After the Axis invasion, Italy captured 2 of Yugoslavia's Hurricane Mk.I's.

While Germany had captured 6 airframes, which were passed on to Romania who built 3 aircraft from the components, Italy captured 1 serviceable and one unserviceable aircraft. The serviceable aircraft was flown initially to Tirana in a minimally Italianised scheme, still retaining the Yugoslav roundel under the port wing.
Transferred to Italy the aircraft was repainted in a custom scheme. While used for evaluation in Italy, the aircraft was photographed being inspected by Mussolini. In 1943 the aircraft was damaged in a landing accident and written-off.
