Re: Project DX
A nice addition, even if the ship itself is somewhat unusual and rather ugly!

Re: Project DX
Great work (but indeed a very ugly design).

Re: Project DX
expanded description coming soon in the first post, but for now:
the above drawing was the only proposal that met the original limits set by admiral Zumwalt: less then 100 million dollars and less then 5000 tons displacement. the only way to let an AEGIS ship meet those requirements was with just an Mk 22 launcher and little else. the design shows, because of that, the smallest hull capable of supporting AEGIS, and would have been not that much bigger then an Perry class frigate. this design was too austere even for Zumwalt, and for that reason the limits were stretched a bit.
there will be 2 more designs until we arive at the designs already drawn by TimothyC, which in turn were alternatives for the ticonderoga class (hence why these will be shown in project DX)

Re: Project DX
Austere to the extreme, but interesting.
Re: Project DX
Indeed, very interesting and I think this shows well the bulk and expense of advanced systems like AEGIS.

Re: Project DX
Excellent work on this thread. That frigate proposal is certainly a bare one with quite a shoestring cost, not even Mk.32 tubes.

Re: Project DX
I don't recall if Friedman or anybody else specifically notes a lack of SVTT. This may be an oversight/artist's choice.
Ace, I would note that the 5kT DG/Aegis is heavily over-equipped with liferafts. USN practice on small vessels is to have 100% capacity with the largest cluster eliminated; here, we see (presuming symmetry) (12-1)*2*25 = 550 crew, which is obviously far in excess of what this ship would carry.

I don't have my references ready at the moment, remind me if I do not check on those liferafts they are currently taken over directly from TJ's drawing.
on the most austere version, shown above, it was mentioned that there was no ASW equipment on board other then a platform for the helicopter. this, in my opinion, suggested there was also no Mk 32 SVTT.

I would agree with that interpretation.

Re: Project DX
I have halved the amount of liferafts and I worked on the ship one year up from the previous one.
