A strange but very interesting (warships/subs design) thread, good drawings
If these designs seem very strange today, during the 1850s-1890s era they (privates attemps) allowed to make very large (design) advances !

Eswube, does that book mention the hinged ship Connector or the SS Ernest Bazin roller ship by any chance?

Thiel, I wonder if the barge you are thinking of was one of the whaleback barges, Detroit had an assortment of cargo ships and barges that used that odd hull design, in fact there was even a ferry that used it.

They remind me of the Confederate semi-submersible ironclad torpedo boat "David".

St. Julien Ravenel and David Ebaugh actually used the cigar ships designed by the Winans' as a basis for the CSS David.

I really enjoy researching and drawing some of the odd and obscure designs of the 1800's, it's amazing what they experimented with back then, even if some ideas were failures or met limited success they are still very intriguing.
