Martinia Merchant Ship
I am new to this forum and would like to show my first shipbucket drawing. I based my drawing off of Whyme's MV Lochiel. This is still a work in progress as it still needs shading and a bunch of other stuff. Another thing is that i can not figure out how to get the correct font. I am using Ariel but it doesn't seem to work. Please let me know how I can improve my drawing. Also this is for an alternate universe I want to work on.

That's a good start, samisunjp! For the font, if you have the Paint.NET program, you can use Arial size 11 and turn off anti-aliasing and it will give you a good match.
Re: Martinia Merchant Ship
Thank you that worked great! I have done some light shading on the ship and removed the horrible looking name on the bow.

Re: Martinia Merchant Ship
if your drawing is based on Whyme's MV Lochiel, shouldn't you credit him?
the masts look a bit fat, the deck height seems a bit too high and the air intakes seem a bit on the small side. having the lifeboat so far from the crew doesn't seem to be that good an idea either, and all those windows make me puzzled..... is this an freighter, passenger ship of an combination of the two?
you seem to have an transom stern, which IIRC was not in use the time this ship looks to be.... which seems to be just aft of WW2 (but steam propelled), am I right?

I ask of you to prove me wrong. Not say I am wrong, but prove it, because then I will have learned something new.

He may have just copied the "lines," so to speak, rather than modify the actual drawing.
Here's the original for comparison:

Thank you for the replies! I will get to work moving some of the stuff around. Yes this is only based of whyme's loichel not the exact or original thing. If I should still credit it let me know I just thought it was only if i slightly changed the original design not Just the "lines". This was supposed to be a multirole ship able to carry passengers and cargo. I'll try to post the update later tonight.

Re: Martinia Merchant Ship
Ok so I did a few changes to the ship. I changed the masts around, put on more air intakes, and moved the lifeboat near the bridge so it is easily accessible. I also tried to change the stern but was not sure if this was the correct style. To answer acelanceloet's question yes it runs of of steam.
HISTORY:
This ship was used as a small passenger ship/Ferry after it was laid down in 1937 but was later turned into a cargo ship after the start of WWII. The ship shown below is in it's prewar configuration.

Welcome aboard Samisunjp
Here are some of my thoughts regarding your ship
Your cargo derricks (booms) are too high on the masts. This feature was used especially by ships that were known as Baltic traders in the inter-wars period, those ships were used mainly for the timber trade between the Baltics and the UK
The aft mast is too far to the stern, making it almost impossible to have a cargo hols there (it is situated above the rudder and propeller).
Your formast is too much forward, and there is no place for a forward cargo hold. You need there the chain loccker belowdecks and the anchorchain capstan above decks.
Superstructure looks too bare and small for a combination passenger/cargo ship. See this example, or this ship for some inspiration.
See this ship for a small cargo ship , although it carried no passengers, you can build up the superstructure for a combi ship.
Thst is all for now, and may I welcome you aboard again.

Please, don`t get me wrong here, I`m not giving you a slap on the face or anything like it, .Samisunjp wrote:Thank you for the replies! I will get to work moving some of the stuff around. The main basis of this whole site, is that we must all feel some kind of respect ones to the others. Even if you hate the guts of any one of them, , which btw, doesn`t exclude what I first said to you here. Despite there being any love or hate among others, we ALWAYS try to respect each other in this issue about drawing in shipbucket style.
For this issue, the sole action of drawing a ship that was first drawn by somebody else, (even if at the end, both drawings end up being as diferent as black from white), can somehow be considered as a rude attitude. Whenever you draw a ship, if you intend to draw a ship that was already made by someone else, the minimum courtesy is that you contact first the original author and ask him for permission to try out another take or version of his drawing. Most of the times, you'll get a positive answer, as most of us despite all the effort we could have put in the job, we like to see it, as best rendered as possible for it to be, as many times during the process, we put a part of our own hearts in trying to accomplish it, so somehow we may feel some kind of love for the ship, and most of us who love something, wants for it the best, despite whatever we may feel. But sometimes we may feel a feeling of posession, for the same reason, and no one who experiences this kind of feeling will accept someone else to do anything on your beloved item. (as most of the times I say it, we human beings are fucked up in our minds, while animals don`t have to worry for such stupid things, ).
Well as I said, first contact the other guy and ask for permission. Once you get his permission, if you use important parts or a great part of his work, there is no question of how to proceed : you MUST credit him, before your own name ( I believe that lots of people round here have received warnings in this particular issue, as it is a very sensible issue).
Now if your drawing is completely made from scratch, you could avoid the issue of crediting the other author in the former drawing, but in the introduction you make, you must tell everybody that you ask for permission to the original author and if posible, post his drawing together with yours, in order that other members judge f there are similarities or if it is another rendering of the same ship (or even class of ship, which is a broader concept, but related), in respect to his work (In my case, I think you should credit him anyway, although In think this later thing I 'm telling you, is more like a personal opinion, than a rule. Maybe one of our moderators can clear this issue up for you, better than me. After all, compared to their work, most of us here, are the same as yourself, only newbies in the art of shipbucket style of drawing).
(PS: don`t ask too many things directly to me, as you don`t really know me, you're not aware whom you're dealing with. I`m a natural speaker and in my "illment", I may give you answers so long that other members could probably do the same thing in only 1 or two sentences).
(sincerely still don`t know, if this green fellow up here, is a good guy or a bad one, but his "grin" is better than the one at the beginning, and one thing for certain, has much more teeth than the ones I have).

Thank you for all of the suggestions!
Rickdog,
I am sorry if what I said came off in the wrong way or anything like that, I was typing that on my phone so it might have been hard to understand. I totally agree with what you said about crediting him. I will stop all work on this ship until I receive approval from whyme. If he does give me the go ahead I will proceed while crediting him. I will make sure in the future to always ask permission on a drawing of a ship based off of another's.
