Japan - Tosa class battleship

#1 Post by BB1987 »

Designed by Yuzuru Hiraga the tosa class, composed by IJN Tosa and IJN Kaga where supposed to be the successor of the Nagato class battleships, armed with 10 16.1-inch (409mm) guns and capable of 26,5 knots they would have been among the most powerful capital ships of their time (US South Dakotas has 12x16-inch but where 3,5 knots slower).
Construction was however halted in 1922 after Japan signed the Washington Naval Treaty, Tosa, only 5 monts before completion was converted into a gunnery test ship and eventually scuttled in 1925, Kaga was converted into a Carrier and was sunk in the famous Battle of Midway.

IJN Tosa as she looked as a target ship after all works where canceled because of the Washington treaty:

and how could she have looked if completed in 1923.

slight update implementing some changes to match up diffierences between the reference drawing and pictures/models of the real Tosa (matching the portholes in the aft section will take a little more time, there are tons of them)

Slowly but steadily advancing towards the goal (to say it quickly, updated again)

There is a massive concentration of portholes in the stern area as you can see, but the real ship (or at least what was completed before beign cancelled because of the Washington Treaty) has that many, and there is still the possibility that i've missed a couple of them...

I was expecting you ;)

Boats will come soon (the boat-crane still lies there near the funnel without the pulley and hook) with some details added to the pagoda mast and the 7.7AA machine guns, my priority was just focused to the portholes mess :)

About the 80mm guns, i'm too a bit puzzled with their placement, but i dont' know either if they are supposed to go on the lower deck; i'll try yo explain it with a picture:

maybe one up and one down? altough it would render ammunition handling more complicated..
