Another DD class, this time from 1916-20. The Yelm Class was built in four groups, each differing in armament and machinery. Depicted is Group 1, built in 1916-17. Groups 2 & 3 were built in 1917 and group 4 was post-war, built from 1918-20. A total of 100 were planned with 86 laid down and 73 being completed and commissioned.
Group 1 - 29
Group 2 - 20
Group 3 - 13
Group 4 - 11 (13 cancelled after being laid down, 14 cancelled before being laid down)

Yelm Class 1917 Group 2
The Group 2 machinery was upgraded with geared turbines and more efficient boilers allowing the top speed to be raised to 34 knots. Armament was changed with the removal of the aft 3"/40 (12 Pdr) and the stand being enlarged to accomodate a pair of 3"/45 HA guns. The twin torpedo tubes were replaced with triples. While officially known as Yelm Class group 2, it is frequently referred to by many naval scholars as the Port Ludlow Class.

Group 3 was virtually identical to, and built concurrently with, group 2, the only difference being that the Group 3 (or Remsley Class) had #4 main gun removed and sponsoned platforms aft to accomodate a pair of DC racks and DC storage.

Yelm Class Group 4
The last 11 ships built in the Yelm Class, also called the Union Class, differed in that they had a transom stern to accomodate the larger DC racks installed. Otherwise, they were identical to Group 2.
