Here's the XB-39, a testing program to prove that the YB-29 could use an alternative powerplant in case the issues with the R-3350 could not be solved. Since that engine did in fact work, even if temperamental at the best of times, the program was discontinued. The engine in question was the Allison V-3420, which was basically two V-1710s paired together.

The XB-44 served as the prototype for what would become the B-50 (original designation was B-29D.) Unlike the B-50, the XP-44 was just a regular B-29 with the R-3350s replaced with the more powerful R-4360.
