Re: USS Indianapolis FOUND!!!
wow, a Buzzfeed article that doesn't make me wanna rip my hair out
any way, it's really cool that they finally found it. i wonder how many more WW2 wrecks are left to be located
I sincerely hope they are found before they are illegally salvaged like an unfortunate number of ships in the Pacific are.

What I like to work on/plan to work on:
US ship Proposals and prototypes
Other ships that haven't yet been put up on Ship bucket
Suggestions Welcomed
Currently working on:
Heavy Cruiser Proposal CA-B: ~80% done.
Heavy Cruiser Proposal CA-C: ~5-10% done.
Heavy/Large Cruiser Proposal CA2-D: ~35% done.
FD Scale P-51A Dazzle Camo Livery: ~5-10% done.
Getting better: Always being worked on.
Finished:
FD Scale P-51D's Dazzle Camo Livery (might be redone)
FD Scale P-51D's German Captured Livery

True! Though I'd at that depth she'd be safe, most of the illegal salvaging happens in water under 300m of depthJohn_McCarthy1 wrote: ↑August 20th, 2017, 4:17 am wow, a Buzzfeed article that doesn't make me wanna rip my hair out

Yeah, wrecks such as Indy, Yorktown, and the ones off Guadalcanal are probably safe. Even most of the ones in the Philippines are, such as the Leyte Gulf wrecks...they're just too deep for these metal-hunting criminals to get to.

Re: USS Indianapolis FOUND!!!
well that's good, I was just thinking of an article I read earlier in the year about a Chinese ship that would go out under the guise of "research" and use a crane to steal the metal from ships, I think it was a couple of well preserved well they were ww2 Japanese transport ships

Re: USS Indianapolis FOUND!!!
Sadly, a couple of wrecks have been removed completely, including De Ruyter.

Re: USS Indianapolis FOUND!!!
Was on Facebook this morning and found a video the BBC put together. Managed to snag this image of a sonar scan. Looks like just that small piece of the bow is on its port side; the rest of the wreck appears to be upright!
Now only Chicago, Helena, and Juneau remain unlocated for USN cruisers sunk during the war.

Re: USS Indianapolis FOUND!!!
I do not even spot the circular opening of the barbettes, but squared objects instead. Might it be that the turrets are still in place? That would be even more suprising than the fact she is upright.

More pictures of the wreck from Paul Allan's twitter, and it looks as though the turrets are still in place.
