Well, before the Marines had the Ospreys, most of these units had the designation of HMM or HMH when these units flew CH-46's and CH53D's. VMM is the re-designations for those units that have Ospreys.

Here are the listings for unit designations:

VMFA - F/A-18A/B and F-35A
VMFA(AW) - F/A-18C/D
VMA - AV-8B and F-35B
HMH - CH-53E
HMLA - UH-1 and AH-1
VMM - MV-22
VMAQ - EA-6B
VMGR - KC-130J
VMU - UAV's

ashebourton wrote:No disrespect, but I'm curious to ask why? He drew a V-22, yes, but I drew mine independent to his, I added him on the credit as he inspired me to draw a V-22 too. :)

I work on these ;) lol
Ah, in that case Colo nails it - his name isn't needed. Sorry about that then.

Is the "V" part of the squadron designation the same "Voler" (French for "flight") I understood to be behind "CV"?

I always read the "V" came from "HeaVier than air", back when there needed to be a distinction between airplanes and airships. ;)

I believe the V stands for VTOL.

All embarked squadrons are V and then the mission F for fighters etc.
All Marines squadrons have M in their designations, hence VMF for embarked Marines fighter squadron.
