Re: FFLX/FFGX
Thanks for the input and I will be revisiting this once my home rennovation is done.
However, please read the OP as some of your design questions and ideas were addressed there such as the ASW suit and the use of certain parts like the 57mm for commonality reasons and using SeaRAM over RAM for for autonomous PD.

Re: FFLX/FFGX
I'll admit it's a lot better than how it started out.
Re: FFLX/FFGX
I started working on this again...
Mostly on the sensors and comms. I went with off the shelf CEAPAR for a modest anti search and ESSM guidance option, and then took various flush comms and other sensors off the DDG1000 which should be mature by the time these hit the street. I leaned on some recent drawings by eric-t and LUET for inspiration and artistic style.
I am currently leaning towards deleting the requirement for a hull or bow mounted sonar. As far as I could tell when using them they were useless in the littorals anyway and it apprears the LCS is doing without, so I may just go with a robust tail option only along with the helos. This should save a lot of money, and will make room for more magazine space (FFGX) or battery space (FFLX) for the common hull and maybe a bow thruster.
This is the FFGX, still working...

Re: FFLX/FFGX
I would consider adding an AN/AQS-22 Dipping sonar from the SH-60R modified for shipboard use. The processing and power would perform well in littoral environments and you could just pull it up on deck when you need to reposition or do any other warfare mission.
Re: FFLX/FFGX
An active towed array would make a lot more sense to me. A number of mid-90s USN frigate concepts envisioned no sonar other than an active tail.

Re: FFLX/FFGX
dipping sonar? you mean those sonobouys on a rope? those things you have to hold still for them to listen? so the ship has to stop, listen for submarines, move, stop, listen ....... ????Lebroba wrote:I would consider adding an AN/AQS-22 Dipping sonar from the SH-60R modified for shipboard use. unless you can actually show me an serious concept where this was at least considered, I am very sceptical of this idea.

I ask of you to prove me wrong. Not say I am wrong, but prove it, because then I will have learned something new.

Re: FFLX/FFGX
The Soviets were rather enamored with the idea. Of course, they did it from corvettes which had no real other option.
Re: FFLX/FFGX
Don't ships do that anyway? Sprint ahead, stop, listen, sprint ahead...?

Re: FFLX/FFGX
some might, but normally they just drive at a small speed... at least we do that in Norway!Colosseum wrote:Don't ships do that anyway? Sprint ahead, stop, listen, sprint ahead...?

Re: FFLX/FFGX
well, they did in WW2, the early sonar tech. now, IIRC, sonars keep working on speeds up to 18 knots, and towed arrays at even higher speeds due to lower interference.
