Re: Type XXI SSB
Hi, I'm not sure as the Golf-esque concept would be terribly catastrophic for the structural design of a Type XXI derivative. There is already a flat bulkhead transition from the figure-8 section amidships to a single circular section pressure hull aft and the missile compartment could be stuffed in ...

Re: Random picture thread Mk 3
Remember the all-electric destroyer design I posted a couple of years ago? A colleague produced a script to turn the CAD models into models; laser cut model of a laser armed ship!

Re: Improved Type 22 + 23 Frigates
Very impressed with these. Although there is a magazine for SW in T22BIII, ESSM is too long to be easily handled I think, so it is likely the mag would be re-purposed. Regarding the knuckle; it isn't needed on @ T22 because the hull & ss are slab-sided. It's presence here implies either hull flare ...

Re: The New HMS Queen Elizabeth
Hi, The thing to remember is *cashflow*. We can talk about overall project cost and spend-to-save and all that very true and laudable stuff but in the end the Treasury (and TBH pretty much everyone else) really only worries about the cash in and cash out per unit time - cashflow. Ultimately if one ...

Re: The New HMS Queen Elizabeth
A couple of points... I think there is a bit too much finger pointing at the MoD here where in reality things have been forced upon them by the treasury, and the MoD and ACA have been chasing around trying to find the least worst option. Regarding ILMS - I wouldn't bet against these ships getting ...

Re: The New HMS Queen Elizabeth
Hi, Although the overall internal volume and displacement of CVF is driven by things like stores and magazines, the flight deck and overall dimensions were driven by the high-intensity sortie rate and the need to stow a number of aircraft on deck. Regarding conversion to CATOBAR; it was included in ...

Sooooooo. I've been quite busy recently. I've been lucky enough to be awarded a BMT Fellowship and since we don't have a good news thread (Why don't we have a good news thread? I'd feel a bit odd starting one for this), I thought I'd put it here as it has a picture: http://www.ucl.ac.uk/mecheng ...

A Little Craft: UCL WFSV
Hi everybody, Something different: A TriSWACH Wind Farm Support Vessel produced for a UCL study into offshore wind farm support approaches. Both similar to and quite different from the Austal TriSWACH vessel. This is a baseline design forming the basis for ongoing modelling, so it is not supposed to ...
